Winter's hold upon the island had passed too slowly, or so it had seemed for Halloween, as she grazed slowly upon the warm grasses within the Rocas territory. Her dull copper coat reflected the neglect the aging mare had endured over the harsh, snowy season, a few bite marks littering her forelegs from where her youngest daughter had gotten hold of her. Said daughter now stood feet away from her dam, her beautiful bay coat shimmering in the spring sunlight. It felt good to be out and about, after a winter of seclusion within the trees. Halloween had taken to keeping a very close eye on Andromeda, as the filly had the knack of wandering off to explore. Despite being only five months old, the young Andromeda had an attitude beyond comprehension. And today was no exception.
Mommm. Can I just go farther than the tree line? I promise I won't talk to strangers, the filly pleaded with her copper colored mother, who merely smirked as she pulled a few soft strands of grass from the earth. Halloween looked at the young filly, her ears tilting back toward her skull. How many times do I have to tell you no, Andromeda? And how many times do I have to remind you that your cutesy voice doesn't work with me anymore. It got old the hundredth time you used it. Halloween chuckled under her breath, lowering her muzzle back to the ground to graze. Andromdea, obviously not wanting to give up, trotted over to her dam, a set look upon her face. Reaching over, she nipped at her mother's shoulder, a bit harsher than she had ever before. In an instant, Halloween's muzzle had shot at her daughter's flank, knocking the small filly to the ground in shock. I'm not afraid to discipline you, Andromeda. No means no. End of discussion. The Arabian snorted at her daughter, who lay splayed on the grass, her eyes wide in fear. As her mother turned back to eating, Andromeda shakily got up, her little tail slapping her hindquarters. Muttering under her breath, the Arabian cross walked away, her head lowered in defeat... for now. halloween & andromeda | three hundred fifty eight | love and loss, two steps from hell | for vel | template [c] lizzeh 2012 |[/blockquote][/blockquote]

They had been in their new home for several weeks now. Though Fortinbras missed their cave the called home by the sea, this was much better for raising a family. It was a large area, always giving them somewhere to go if they did not want to see any of the other herd members. Rocas did not have many members, nor had they been able to regain the numbers they once had before the Zunden attack, but it was a nice little herd. Most of the horses who lived here were families, much like Fortinbras, Halloween, and Andromeda. There had to be at least four other foals a little older than his daughter mucking about the land with their mothers or each other. Perhaps he would have to go snag one of the mares and have them come with him to introduce their child to his. Andromeda desperately needed friends. It was just not right for a foal to live in solitude, the only company being her parents. Even in Fortinbras' not-so-great childhood, he had found friends who had kept him entertained. Andromeda needed to do the same.
The only problem with Andromeda and finding friends was her sour personality. Where that had come from, Fortinbras could not figure out. As far as he was concerned, he was a pleasant horse to converse with and easy to please. Halloween was a kind spirit with a loyal soul. Why was their daughter such a large contrast from them both? Right from the moment she started talking it was apparent that she was going to be the kind of horse who would inevitably make her way to the dark side as she grew up. Try as he might, Fortinbras knew that deep down Andromeda was not going to change just because of him. It would take a lot more than her parents to sweeten her bitter self.
Speaking of Halloween and Andromeda, Fortinbras had them in his line of sight. He had been away from the for most of the day, just wandering around their new home exploring. He might be a herd bound stallion now, but his wandering spirit remained. That was why he was so thankful for the size of Rocas. There was always somewhere new for him to go if he got the urge to wander around. He might like to travel, but he would never leave his family for long. He could not do that. He would not turn out to be like his own mother had been.
"Ciao miei amori." he greeted, his eyes flicking between mother and daughter. "What have you been up to today Andromeda?" he asked. At least he could try talking to her. He did love her after all.

A soft breeze floated through the small meadow, ruffling the small foal's mane. Turning her eyes upon the stallion who approached, she frowned and let out a sharp snort. Did he really think she was some little girl who wanted to explain every single thing about her day? Her nose wrinkled, and she let the corners of her mouth fold up into a smirk.
Oh, nothing, Dad, Andromeda rolled her eyes, and turned her head to look at the trees around them. The young filly looked at her mother, her ears flicking slightly. Halloween felt her daughter's eyes upon her, and looked up from the ground. A small smile crossed her maw as she saw Fortinbras by her. His eyes settled on the filyl as she gave her answer. Did she really have to be so ornery about everything? Fortinbras would blame it on her age since most foals would just be going through a phase, but Andromeda was much too young to be going through that stage yet. Besides that, she had been like this from day one. He often asked himself where did he go wrong? Halloween had raised a daughter before. A wonderful, polite, sweet girl. Why was Andromeda on the opposite end of the spectrum?
"No." he answered with a smile as his mate came over to greet him. "She'd have to try a lot harder if she really wanted to give me trouble." Fortinbras added with a grin, casting the filly another glance. "Speaking of trouble, has Andromeda met any of the other foals around here?" he asked, turning his attention back to Halloween. "I've been wandering around here and meeting some of our herd mates. Most of them have families with children around her age. Perhaps getting her out to play with some of the others would change her attitude."

It was if they didn't realize she could hear them talking! The little bay threw her head up in disgust, her golden optics narrowing as she pranced off. Silky strands from her small tail floated over her hindquarters, as she had moved a fair distance from her parents, her ears pinning against her fragile skull.
Sometimes I wish they would just disappear for a few hours... the filly muttered under her breath, a sharp dagger scraping across the soft earth below her, blades of grass mixing with the dark brown soil. Flaring her nostrils, Andromeda glanced over her shoulder, back to her sire and dam, her gold pools still narrowed. The young filly seemed to always be in some sort of foul mood, ever since she was born. And Andromeda liked it that way.
A great sigh escaped the penny coated dame, as the mother Arabian turned her dial to look at the black stallion at her side. No, I haven't even seen any other members of the herd. Andromeda has been keeping us pretty secluded from the others. It was, partially, the truth. The little filly always kept her dam on the move, away from any unwanted eyes. And Halloween went along with her daughter's wishes. The copper colored mare didn't know if she wanted to be social with the other herd members or not. It had been quite some time since she was in a herd where the others conversed with one another.
Ears atop the mare's head swiveled forward, noting how her bay filly had moved farther away, toward the treeline. She'd let it slide for now, deciding that the little filly would be safe within the boundaries of Rocas. If she stayed there, that was. halloween & andromeda | two hundred eighty six | arthas, my son; wotlk soundtrack | template [c] lizzeh 2012 |[/blockquote][/blockquote]

A frown settled on that dark muzzle as the Arab mar mentioned that she had not met many of the other herd members. Of course, as always, it was because of their daughter. Why she had a strange aversion to other horses, Fortinbras did not know. She might have been born on a secluded seaside retreat, but she had been with her parents. It was not like she had been totally shut off from the rest of the world. Even the random horse who would come by now and then was an unwanted stranger in the filly's eyes.
Fortinbras glanced to his daughter who had taken to wandering around the small area they were in. Most likely to keep herself entertained. At least he could talk to his mate without having to worry about the filly prying into their conversation. "I don't understand why she doesn't like other horses. Or much of anything really." he stated, casting Andromeda another look. "Perhaps we should take her with us on a stroll around the land. After all, there is no reason you should be kept from meeting anyone here."
__
There he was. That black fiend. The colt had followed him for the past miles. He had stuck to the shadows, just out of sight as any good spy would do. His mission today was to gather information on the dark stallion and his evil co-conspirators. If they thought they were going to take over this land without a fight, they were sadly mistaken. Tristan would make sure of that.
Now all he had to do was catch what he was saying to the copper mare. She was behind it all. A pretty face she might be, but inside that head was the mind of a devious mastermind. What he did not plan on was the filly who was wandering in his general direction. His cover would be blown. His eyes widened as she came closer. She was the one they had kidnapped! The daughter of the god and goddess of the land. He had to get her to safety. "Psst. Over here princess." he said, thinking that like any other foal, she would play along.

There was a hesitation to Halloween, as the black stallion she called her mate suggested they brought Andromeda along when they went for a walk through the harem they now called their home. Ears tucked against her skull, and she shot a look of uncertainty at her counterpart.
If you think I am really going to walk around with her whining all the time, you are mistaken. You obviously haven't heard her when she doesn't get her way, There was a slightly chuckle within her words, as she shook her head. Gentle eyes drifted to Andromeda, a deep sigh escaping the aging Arabian's body. Eyes closed and she lowered her head toward the ground. I don't know what else to do with her, dear. She is the complete opposite of her. She's more like how i was when I was younger, but I don't believe I was this bad. How Halloween was when she was younger... the thought sent a shiver of pure terror through the copper maiden, and she swung her tail across her hindquarters. If Andromeda was going in the direction that Halloween had, then the mare's work was cut out for her. Halloween had been a bit rebellious, eventually severing ties from her family to indulge herself in other things.
A faint whisper caught the filly's attention, and her ears flicked forward to catch what it said. Princess? She scoffed, and noticed the colt hiding within the shadows, it were almost as if - Hey! What do you think you're doing here?! Spying, no doubt, by who said you could spy on me? Of course. Andromeda didn't see it as Tristan spying on her parents, but on herself. It was always about her. And I'm not a princess. Sadly, Andromeda didn't realize the young colt was playing a game, and only wanted her to join in on it. How naive the young bay was. halloween & andromeda | three hundred fifteen | lux aeterna, two steps from hell | template [c] lizzeh 2012 |[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Fortinbras frowned at his mate's words. "She's going to have to learn that things don't always go her way. She has to learn that life is not always fair and she should make sacrifices for others. I'll take her around with me. I know that she probably does not like me very much, but I'd like to spend the time with her." he told the Arab. There was something he saw in his daughter when she looked at or talked to him that made him think she could not care less about him. If little Andromeda liked anyone, it was Halloween. But that was only natural because, obviously, the mare was her mother. Even though Fortinbras' own mother was not the best, he had still loved her.
"Unfortunately, not everyone's the same." he said when Halloween mentioned her other daughter. Fortinbras still missed the young mare. He often thought of her and hoped that she was safe where ever it was she was living. He refused to believe that anything bad had happened to her. Perhaps one day they would find her again. He had come to love her as much as he loved his own flesh and blood. For a filly who had not been sired by him, she acted more like Fortinbras thought Andromeda would.
_____
"Shhhhh!" Tristan hissed, almost flattening his ears to accentuate his efforts. "They'll hear us talking!" he whispered to her, inching closer until they were almost nose to nose. "And I'm not spying on you. Duh." he told her as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "I'm spying on them." The colt jerked his head in the direction of the filly's parents who were clearly engrossed in their own conversation. "I only came here to rescue you." Tristan said proudly, lifting his head and puffing out his narrow chest.
"Not a princess? You must have had your head hit harder than you thought when they took you." he said with a frown as his chocolate eyes drifted to the top of the bay's head. "They took you for ransom, hoping your parents would surrender the kingdom in order to get you back. They've been after the throne for quite some time now." The buckskin rambled on and on, thinking, that like any other foal in this land, she would catch right on with these childish games of make believe.

Lifting her head from it's current position, Halloween looked toward Fortinbras as he spoke of taking Andromeda by himself. The copper Arabian flared her nostrils, not going to protest, as she knew how important it was for the little filly to bond with her sire. Gentle eyes swept across the meadow, over to where Andromeda had wandered, ears shifting forward as she noticed her daughter was almost hidden by the trees. Shaking her head, she turned to look once more at the black stallion, a small smile tugging at her lips. If you really think you should take her with you, by all means, go ahead. I'm not going to stop you from bonding with your daughter, a gentle chuckle rumbled through the mare, as she placed her muzzle along his neck, nuzzling into the black coat. She was, for the first time in a long time, truly happy.
- / -
All this gibberish was making Andromeda ticked off, and as she slapped her bay hide with her tail, she let her ears pin back against her skull. Okay, I don't know what planet you came from, but you are weird. My parents didn't abduct me from anywhere, I am their child, and I am not a princess of any kingdom. Her voice faded, and she glanced over to where her father and mother stood, ears lifting slightly off her head. Sometimes, she did wish she wasn't born to the pair. They were so unlike her, the complete opposite, and it made their relationship quite... difficult. They just didn't understand her.
Gaze went back to Tristan, and she snorted. You must've hit your head if you think these things... what is your name, anyways? Or did you forget that when you hit your head and started spewing such lies and slander? Something in her voice had changed, the young filly easing her way into this game of his. Realizing only now how close this buckskin colt was to her, she backed up, shaking her head slightly. She liked her personal space, and this little upstart wasn't going to start invading it.

A broad smile flashed across his face as Halloween said that getting Andromeda out for a bit would be good for the both of them. "We'll have a grand ol' time! Of course Andromeda might not think so, but there has to be something I do with her or show her that she likes. I hate not knowing what makes the eyes of my own daughter light up like a dog who just found a new bone." Fortinbras knew it would be difficult to break through that cold, bitter outer shell, but he would eventually work his way into the filly's dark little heart. Perhaps he had been graced with such an interesting child to try his patience and make him actually work to gain acceptance from someone he truly loved with all his heart even if she did not return those feelings.
The stag's eyes shifted to the filly in question. She seemed to have found a friend to play with. Fortinbras cocked his large head at the sight of the little buckskin. He knew (mostly from meeting some of the other horses in the herd) this colt was the son of one of the mares who lived here with her mate and twin colts. "It seems as if Andromeda has found a willing playmate." he said with a small laugh.
__
The serious expression remained on the colt's face as the filly flicked her tail in annoyance and pinned her small ears back at him. "I knew this would happen." Tristan muttered to himself, yet his voice was loud enough for the bay to clearly understand him. "This is exactly what they want you to belive, my lady." he explained.
"Me? Hit my head?" he repeated with a snort. "I think they might have kicked you in the head hard enough to cause memory loss or give you strange herbs to make you forget. They then filled our head with this falsereality. I assure you that my intentions are not to lie to you. I just want to return you to the kingdom and restore peace."
"Oh!" he exclaimed when she asked for his name. "How rude of me for not introducing myself." Tristan aplogised. "I am Sir Tristan, favourite knight of the king and queen of Gaelen." the colt said proudly, puffing out his narrow chest. "And though I know your name my lady, what is it these vile horses have decided to tell you?"

An ear had tilted toward Fortinbras as he spoke, knowing exactly what he was meaning. It was difficult at times to understand what exactly made Andromeda tick, what made her so disgusted with the world. Of course, you couldn't only guess so much, before the young bay filly would snap at you and become distant. Usually was after a few questions, then she'd become unresponsive. Halloween brought her maw from her mate's neck, turning her dished face to look in the direction that she knew Andromeda was standing. She tried listening in on what the two foals were talking about, but they were too far away to be heard.
Let's hope that this will mean she'll open up a bit more.. She does need a playmate. I can't do everything, I'm not Supermom. The Arabian snorted at her joke, and lowered her head to nibble on a few blades of grass. An exhausted sigh escaped her, as she became tired suddenly. Eyes grew heavy, and she glanced up at the black stallion next to her. I'm exhausted... care to keep an eye on her while I nap? - x - Really, how many times was this colt hit in the head? Andromeda's eyes narrowed to slits, and she felt like bringing a hoof up and knocking it upside the buckskin's head. Of course, something caused her to resist harming him, and she snorted derisively. As he continued on with his rambling, Andromeda lost her interest in her new companion, instead looking past him, toward where she knew he had come from. Ears had lifted from her tiny skull, intent on exploring past the meadow that her dam had confined her in. Blinking her eyes quickly, her attention was torn away from any explorations she might've wanted to go on, turning upon Tristan once more.
Something about him made a rare smile cross upon her muzzle. Perhaps it was this playfulness that he was exhibiting. Eyelashes were batted at him, as he basked in his 'knighthood'. It had occurred to her that this was a game, and the young colt wanted her to play along. Perhaps, just this once, she was indulge him, and shed the cold exterior surrounding her heart. Well, Sir Tristan, I go by Andromeda. Since you're so sure that I'm the king and queen's daughter, why aren't you off fighting my captors instead of sneaking me away? Ears were tilted forward, as her body moved against his gently, teasingly, as she stared at her parents. Or, we could just sneak away now, and explore before we go back to my parents, the filly suggested, looking to Tristan now, an ear tilted toward him curiously. "Aw, c'mon Halloween, you are supermom. Look how long you've been able to keep her busy. She might think you're annoying, being around all the time, but she never had anyone to get away with before. You've done just a fine job. Hell, you've done a better job than I have. At least she likes you." Fortinbras said. The stallion merely watched his mate as she put her head down to grab several blades of grass. She looked worn out.
He was not surprised when she said that she was exhausted and wanted to take a nap. She deserved a nap. In his eyes, she deserved a thousand for all the time she spent with their daughter. "Alright." he said with a smile. "You know where to find us once you wake up."
----------
The colt's eyes lit up as she gave him her name. Well, that was rather easy. From how she was being so far, Tristan thought that she might ask something along the lines of 'well what do you want my name for?'. Luckily for him she was actually catching onto their game. "I'm glad to see that they haven't tried to convince you that your name is something else." he said, breathing out a sigh of relief.
"Well Princess Andromeda that's actually a very good question. You see, I might be one of the best knights in the kingdom, but even I know that I cannot take on multiple horses who have stolen you away. If there were just one or two, maybe even four or five, I could do it. But these two with you now are just a very small fraction of the army that is in the surrounding area. Plus, if I sneak you away then it will take them longer to figure out that you are gone."
"The only prize I wish for is the honour that comes with serving my kingdom and saving their princess." he answered with a smile. "If the bounty on your captors was the only thing I was after, I would already be devising a plan to capture and possibly kill them. Once you are safely returned, your kingdom's army will go to war. Plus me being here gives them an insight on what this place is like and how many they will be fighting."
"I'm glad you're eager to get going princess." he said with a grin. "Alright, the moment he looks away, you and I will make a break for it. I don't know this land very well, but I've seen enough to get us out and on the way back to your kingdom." Just as Tristan finished, the black stallion put his head down to graze. A grin spread across the colt's face as he took in the sight. "Let's go!" he whispered, turning his body in the direction he had come from, casting and glance over his shoulder to see if Andromeda would follow.

A quick nod from the copper hued mare, and she dragged her tired body over to a nearby tree, legs folding underneath her. Once she knew she as comfortable, she was almost instantly asleep, her sides rising and falling gently.
- x -
Nostrils quivered in excitement, as Tristan explained everything. All the small filly heard, however, was a bunch of mumbling. As Andromeda watched her mother move off to sleep, her attention then was drawn by the dun colt at her side. Ears tilted toward him, as head swiveled to look in his direction. She hadn't ever played a game like this before, most of the games she played were with her mother, mostly hide and see and that got boring after a while. This game was elaborate, and the filly wondered if Tristan played with other foals like this. Blinking her eyes at him as he told her they would wait for their opening, Andromeda glanced back to the dark stallion who sired her.
Tristan's voice broke her trance, urging her to go. She turned suddenly, ready to follow after him, but paused. She hesitated for just a moment, not sure if she should really just leave without telling her parents where she was going. Wait. Was she really debating on telling her parents something? Ears flattened in frustration, more at the fact she was acting so... kind... and legs moved her after her new friend. "Lead the way."

The colt eyed her curiously as she glanced back at her parents. It seemed as if she was finally catching on how to play this game. At least she seemed more interested than before. It seemed as if she had never participated in playing any games like this before. what kind of foal did not pay pretend with others? This was one of Tristan's favourite past times. Having grown up with three siblings, one slightly older and his twin, he always had someone to play with, even if his brothers could be jerks sometimes. When they were not around, Tristan would always take to playing with the few other foals in this land. They were always running amok and getting into as much mischief as they could. At least Terra de Rocas was a safe environment for horsing around.
Tristan could not keep the grin from spreading across his face when she told him to lead the way. there it was, confirmation. She was quickly catching on and willing to play. then again, from the look she had given her parents, Tristan figured that she might want to get away regardless. Nevertheless, the little boy was elated.
"I'm glad to hear that you wish to return to your kingdom princess. Everyone's been so worried about you." he said, going back into 'knight mode'. "You have to be really quiet. It looks like they are both settle down for the night. Now that their attention is on something else, just slip through these bushes and follow me!" he said, whirling around and trotting a couple strides off before looking back over his shoulder to see if Andromeda was coming.
When he saw the filly behind him, the young stallion snorted and broke into a very animated trot. "Best be getting out of here quickly, just in case the notice something's amiss!" Tristan exclaimed, breaking into a quick canter and heading down the forest path.
