Snow had finally fallen upon Isola, winter's hold quite strong upon the island. A lone mare, very pregnant by the looks of her swollen sides, traipsed through the foot of snow, her eyes wandering around to the barren branches of the willow trees. Her breath rose in great plumes of steam before her face, gasps from the pain of the filly tossing around inside her. Will you cut it out, the pretty Arabian snapped, turning her head to look at her stomach. Small snowflakes fell around her bay body, causing a shiver to run through the mare. Continuing on, Halloween looked for a place to rest for now. She had been traveling for a few days now, away from the cave her and Fortinbras shared near the sea.
She had gone back to that cave, a few weeks after talking to her mate, and found it occupied by a very cranky elder horse. Not wanting to put up with that, being as she was pregnant and had to deal with an unruly foal, Halloween embarked on a journey to find another place to rest. It's what brought her to the willow tree forest, knowing there must've been some cave close. An unusual silence filled the air, not even a cold wind rustled the frozen branches intertwined overhead.
Nostrils quivered, as another sharp pain ran through her body, and Halloween closed her eyes as she walked. The baby was coming sooner than she thought, and this caused her to worry. If she didn't find shelter soon, her filly could die out here in the snow. Dark brown eyes opened as the pain subsided, and she looked around, noticing that the ground ahead suddenly dropped off. A cliff, meaning that somewhere below had to be a cave for her to rest in. Halloween peered over the edge, then along the cliff, to see if there was a way down. Noticing a small pathway down, she headed over to it, making sure not to slip and hurt herself.
As she made it to the bottom, another sharp pain took hold of her body, and she paused her movements. Whatever this child was doing to her was killing her. Snorting, she nipped at her stomach, then continued on. Finally, the large mouth of a cave appeared next to her, and she immediately turned into it, a warmness she hadn't felt in days taking hold of her. Knees buckled underneath her, as she reached the back wall, her breathing becoming labored. The baby, despite being too early, was coming now, no matter how much Halloween didn't want it to.
Hours passed, more snow falling outside of the cave, piling on top of the already accumulated snow, covering the mare's tracks. Inside the cave, a rather large filly shivered beside Halloween, her light bay coat sticking to her body. A faint nicker escaped the foal, as she nudged her mother's belly, and Halloween snorted. Okay, okay, came a mumble from the mare, and she reluctantly got to her hooves, the filly doing the same then starting to nurse. The Arabian lowered her head, her ears back, deep brown eyes closed. She was quite exhausted, and the cold wasn't helping her any. Another faint nicker escaped the filly, and Halloween turned her head, nuzzling her daughter's neck.
There, there, Andromeda. If you had waited, it would've been warmer and you wouldn't be shivering, the mare nibbled gently on her filly's forelock, and Andromeda snorted, her nostrils flaring. It wasn't as if I had a real choice in the matter, came the filly's soft voice, which surprised Halloween. She knew that her daughter would be much different than her first, and this scared the older mare. What in the world had they created?

Any day now. It would be any day now. That was what Fortinbras kept telling himself. His dear mate was due with their child any day now. that would be wonderful news to any other parent except for the fact it was the middle of winter. This was a time for horses to stay in small groups, keep warm, and try to survive on what little foliage there was. Leave it to fate to decide that Fortinbras' son or daughter should be born in the middle of this frigid season. Would the foal survive? Normally children who were born during this season died the day of their birth or shortly after. The lucky ones were always weak little things that developed health problems or stunted growth as they aged. He did not want that to happen to his little girl or boy. Fortinbras never understood a father's pride until now. Even though his offspring had not been born, he love him or her. Hell, he loved them as much as he loved his mate. He would give his life for the both of them.
Some time had passed and Fortinbras decided he would go to the cave that he and Halloween had made their unofficial home. If she was going to foal, he knew she was more than smart enough to go somewhere where the elements would not be as harsh. He figured she was just as excited as him about this, despite her constant moodiness and annoyance with the foal inside her.
It did not take long for the Campolina to reach his cavernous abode. What greeted him when he got there was not what he was expecting. He was half expecting to find a flustered looking Halloween or nothing at all. Instead he was greeted with the sight of his Halloween and their child. A filly. She was beautiful. Her coat was a rich bay and everything else about her seemed to be perfect. Little Andromeda was finally here.
Fortinbras nickered and slowly moved forward, not wanting to startle the foal. The smile on his face could practically light up the room. He was beaming like the sun when he reached the Arabian. He touched his muzzle to hers and looked to the little foal. "Hello there little one." he said softly.

It was only a few minutes, and then Fortinbras entered the cave. Ears on top of Halloween's head twitched, and nostrils flared at her mate, as he cautiously came over. Part of her wanted to nip at him, but she reluctantly accepted the nuzzle he gave her, then looked to their daughter. Andromeda had stopped nursing well before her father had entered their little haven from the storm, her ears tilted toward the entrance of the cavern. The filly's golden eyes narrowed as her father spoke, and she shook her head quite violently, usually it would send a foal sprawling across the ground. Despite how young she was, however, she stood her ground, slapping her hindquarters with her little tail.
Well, well. And here I thought that my mother merely got pregnant by some random stallion, the filly's soft voice was released into the winter's air, a puff of steam rising before her small face. Golden eyes flashed, as she stared at Fortinbras, her fairly large body moving away from her dam's side, closer to the Campolina. Andromeda! You will not act like this toward your father, Halloween nipped her daughter's shoulder, and the filly let out a snort, nipping her mother's muzzle right back.

What came out of the filly's mouth was a shock to the stallion. Here he had been expecting some timid little girl who hid behind her mother at the sight of him. How wrong he was. What she said to him were not the first words he wanted to hear out of his daughter's mouth. Hell, they were not the words he wanted to hear out of anyone's mouth for the first time. What had caused the little bay to act like this right off the bat. He knew she did not get this sour temperament from either of her parents. So just where did it come from? that was the real question.
Fortinbras flattened his ears and shot the filly a sharp look. He was just glad that Halloween quickly scolded the foal because he was about to do that himself. This was not how he imagined this at all. "Well I see you are both fine and doing well." he said, his chocolate eyes flicking between the two. "Welcome to the world little Andromeda." he said as kindly as possible.

Ears had decided to place themselves upon Halloween's skull, quite annoyed with how her daughter had entered this world. How in world had she come out looking so perfect, but having the attitude of a monster? Nostrils flared at the young filly, before her soft eyes turned to her mate. Yes, we're quite well, as you can see, her voice was strained, and she stomped a hoof against the cavern floor. She didn't want to admit that she hated to think of how the future would be for Andromeda, who showed signs of following the darker paths in life.
Sensing her mother's sour demeanor, Andromeda rolled her darkened eyes, turning her gaze onto the black stallion standing before the duo. Tail slapped against her hide once more, as a chilly breeze swept into the wide cavern, carrying a few snowflakes from the ground outside in their general direction. As the cold hit her body, a shiver ran through the young horse. Of course, despite her cocky attitude, she still depended on her parents for everything. That would change, however, once she was old enough to leave.
And leave she would. If she could leave now, she would've been gone in a heartbeat, nothing but a whisper upon the wind, a lost memory. Andromeda's small ears twitched, as Halloween let out a sigh, and she turned her head slightly so that an eye stayed upon her dam. Fortinbras. We really need to find a herd. I don't think we can make it this winter, not when she has come so early, the little filly could detect the fright in her mother's words, scared to be away from others of their kind. Andromeda didn't see the problem with them staying in this cave. They didn't need some other horses telling them what they could and couldn't do.

His eyes remained on the filly as Halloween began to speak. What was wrong with their child? She had such a bitter, snarky attitude at only a few hours old. As much as Fortinbras hated to say it, he was afraid to see what his daughter would grow up to be like. Fortinbras almost thought of this as some sort of punishment from some higher power. It was his punishment for his not so savoury past that he had kept secret from Halloween. Hell, for all he knew he might have more children out there somewhere and they might all act like this. His mother had not been the best horse in the world, and he had no idea about his father. Maybe he was the oddity in his family and little Andromeda was just carrying on the family tradition.
Halloween then said that they really needed to find a herd. He could detect a slight waver of fear in her voice. She was serious this time. They had talked about it before, but they decided that they did not need a herd. All they needed was each other and their little home in the cave on the beach. It had been the perfect life for so long. Now that they had a young child, they had to think about her. Fortinbras was willing to go join a herd for the sake of his daughter's upbringing. "I would have to agree with you Halloween. As nice as this is, we need something better now that Andromeda is with us. You dont want to grow up in a dark cave your whole life, do you Andromeda?" he asked, turning toward the filly.
The stag then turned his attention back to his mate. "Would you like me to go in search of a suitable herd later on today?"

As her parents spoke, Andromeda's mind wandered. Usually, a filly's thoughts weren't on anything particular, but this one was different. Her mind was plagued with leaving her pathetic parents, despite being mere hours old, and on her future. A future where she would roam free, never to be touched by another horse. The filly's attention was grabbed from her thoughts as her sire spoke to her. Flicking her ears back, a sickly sweet voice escaped her vocal cords. Why, no, Daddy. I don't want to stay in this icky cave forever, her eyes narrowed at the stallion, nostrils flaring. How in the world did he see her? Did he think she was going to be some sweet little think that would stick by their sides, and be the perfect daughter?
A snort escaped her at the thought, which caused Halloween to nudge the filly gently on the shoulder. Andromeda resisted the urge to bite at her dam's muzzle again, merely slapping her little tail against her hindquarters in protest. A small smile crossed the elder Arabian's maw, and she looked to Fortinbras once more. That would be great if you did. I sure don't want to spend the rest of my life in caves, even if it is with you, the mare stepped closer to Andromeda, feeling the filly's body temperature dip a little due to the cold outside.
The filly wouldn't admit it, but the cold was getting to her. A shiver ran through her, and she sidled up to her mother, relishing in the warmth she gave off. Okay, so she needed her mother more than she realized. A sigh of surrender escaped the filly, and her knees buckled under her as she lie down upon the ground. Halloween glanced to Andromeda, then to Fortinbras, the smile still upon her maw. She too dropped down, making sure to be as close to her daughter as possible, so that the filly wasn't cold.

Fortinbras looked to his daughter as she made some snide comment about living in the cave. What was worse about the whole little ordeal was that he could not tell if Andromeda was actually being serious or sarcastic. At this point he did not know what what to believe anymore. Too bad there weren't any other mares around with similar looking foals. Fortinbras would swear that their children had gotten mixed up. This little hot-headed, spitfire of a filly was not what he had in mind when he had been imagining his future daughter.
He was glad to hear that his mate was just as eager for him to look for a herd as he was to offer. "I have one in mind." he told her. "I've spoken to their newest leader a couple times and I am on good terms with her. I guess I shall go pay her a visit and ask if there is room for three more in her land." he said with a smile. Fortinbras had been affiliated with the old leader of Rocas and when she had died he had come to pay his condolences. That was when he met their head warrior who was now serving as head of the herd. As rough around the edges as she seemed, he knew that the mare had a kind heart and would most likely accept his request.
"I shall be back in a few hours." the Campolina said bobbing his head. "I love you both." he said with a smile. His eyes traveled from Andromeda to Halloween. He would keep his little family safe and happy no matter what. With that said, Fortinbras was off.
~~
The trek to Rocas had gone relatively quick. He had found their leader in record time and was out of the land before most horses would have even found the lead of land. The journey back had taken a bit longer due to the spitting snow flurries, but he managed to make it back in one piece.
"Halloween, Andromeda, I'm back!" he called out as he entered the cavern that they called home. "I spoke with the leader of Rocas and we now have a new home." he informed them both with a broad smile. "There are even three or four foals there around a bit older than Andromeda. So she'll have someone to do something with. I'm sure she'd like that much better than staying with us 'old' horses all day." Fortinbras said looking to Halloween.

Sleep had taken hold of Halloween, and she lie against the cavern wall, her head tucked close to her body. Nearby, Andromeda stood, her eyes staring out at the world beyond where they made their home. Nostrils quivered, and she took a few precarious steps forward, tail slapping against her hindquarters. Oh, how she wanted to explore. Sadly, this temptation was cut short when her father returned, all giddy with excitement. Ears pinned against her skull, and she breathed out slowly, her eyes watching the mist that appeared before her maw, as if more interested in that than anything else.
Halloween was stirred by the commotion of Fortinbras, and shook her head wildly as she scrambled to her hooves. A snort escaped flared nostrils, and she looked to her mate, ears tilted forward. The leader said yes? That's wonderful news! At least now Andromeda doesn't have to grow up without other foals to play with, and we will be protected by a herd, the mother Arabian turned to her filly, who snapped out of her trance-like state to look at the mare. Oh, you want my opinion on this matter, came the cool response of the young horse, her front hoof stomping on the cave floor. Halloween threw her maw up in exasperation, mumbling something under her breath.
Turning to Fortinbras, Halloween took a few steps forward. Lead the way then, my dear. The Arabian was quite anxious to get going, as the cold weather was getting to her aging bones.
