~Dax~
Dax had been patrolling his land for sometime. It was strange, he felt as if another horse was nearby, but he could not find it. Perhaps he was smelling the sent of an equines many miles away? Impossible. He sighed and continued his patrol. As the sun grew higher in the air he decided to rest. Coming up beside a frozen stream he kicked the ice with all his might. A high shattering sound rang through the land. Satisfied with his work he set about gulping in the icy water. He felt as if his throat were an ice cube, so he stopped quickly and only sipped the water. Refreshed he began digging through the snow for some lunch. He found bits of frozen grass and nibbled away at it. Still hungry he walked farther into the land looking for a good spot to eat. The snow crunched under his hooves, you could here the slightest noise in this eerie place. It spooked Dax he walked on a little uneasy. The land had never been this quiet. Was it just that he had taken a break to listen, or was something wrong?

The mare slowly trekked through the growing snow. Winter. It was one of her favourite seasons. Most horses hated winter time, but it never bothered Karma. Maybe it was because she was a Nyfrio and snow was a part of her element? She always thought that as an explanation. Whatever it was, she didn't let it bother her. She was her own self and could do and liked what she pleased.
Karma had been wandering the island for some time now. She had lived with a very small herd who roamed the unclaimed lands for most of her life. She had decided to leave them almost a year ago when she heard of the elemental risings. Perhaps there were more Nyfrios around the island, even though she highly doubted it. It was worth a shot though right?
It had taken her such along time to even meet another Nyfrio. The one she did meet was a very old mare who turned out to be her great grandmother. She stayed with her for a while until the old mare got sick and died. Karma then went on her way again.
She had followed her instinct and it lead her to this land. She had felt almost at home here. She had met the old lead stallion, Culver. He had helped her develop her powers so they were much stronger than when she had arrived. Then, one day, he just went missing. Karma had no clue where he could have gone. Why would he leave without a word? It had confused her and also caused her to fall in a sort of depression.
Now Karma was wandering around, hoping that someone else would come to lead this fine herd of one. The mare halted when she saw a horse up ahead. Could it be? Another Nyfrio had come to take Culver's place? The mare lifted her head and let out a whinny, calling to him.

~Dax~
Dax continued trekking about uneasily. As he listened to the silence the sent of another equine grew stronger, and more distinctive. It was a mare. He was stilling trying to decide where the scent was coming from when he heard a whinny behind him. He turned to see a lovely, appaloosa looking mare. He trotted in her direction, letting out a whinny as his strong legs carried him swiftly to her side. Now only a few feet away from the mare he said. "Hello. I'm Dax, Lord of the Water Herd, and who are you?" Dax smiled at the mare. She seemed nice enough. She didn't look all that elemental, but Nyfrios were known to have normal coats. Perhaps he had found the first member of his herd?

The spotted mare remained still and interested as the stag approached her and gaver her his calling, Dax. He also said that he was the new leader of this land. Well, he didn't exactly say that he was the new leader, seeing as he did not know about Culver, but nonetheless he was here.
Karma bobbed her head a bit and said "Hello Dax. I am Karma." The mare looked him up and down for a minute. He was much smaller than Culver, but ehn again Culver was a very large draught type horse. Karma could tell right away that Dax was a Nyfrio and not just some random stallion who thought this land looked like a nice place to set up his new home. "So where did you come from?" Karma inquired, curious as to where he had been this whole time and why he had not shown up before, or during, Culver's reign.

Dax listened as the mare said she was called Karma. What a fine name he thought. He began to wonder why she was named Karma well the mare seemed to inspect him for a minute. She asked where he was from and he didn't hesitate to say. "I'm from someplace on the Island obviously. My mother died recently, so our little hidden herd diminished. Now I have taken this land for myself and all Nyfrios. I have a very short and boring life story. I don't expect you to want to listen to me babble about my mother for two hours instead. Where are you from?" Dax looked at the mare called Karma a while longer then turned to look around. It was still rather quiet and he wanted to go back to the area surrounding the entrance to the land instead of standing around talking. He grunted and turned back to the mare.

Karma silently watched the stallion as he told her of his very sort and seemingly boring past. Truth be told, the mare really did want to hear about his past. She did not care if it was boring. It may seem boring to him, but it would probably interest her. Karma was amused by the smallest things. She also liked listening to stories more than talking herself.
"Oh, my story is similar to yours." she sighed as she looked down to her snow covered hooves. "I too was born, obviously, on this island. I lived with my mother and father, and two other Nyfrios in our own little group in the woods near Belle Valle. A sickness came over the herd and my mother and I were the only ones to survive. I then left when she passed on. I was very young then." Karma said. "Just my luck I actually ran into my grandmother on my travels. I stayed with her until the end of her days as well. Then I found my way to this land when Culver, the old leader, had it. One day he disappeared and I didn't." Karma told him. Her story was short, sweet, and to the point.

Dax listened patiently to her story, it was a lot like his, short and usual. "So you're a Nyfrio then?" He inquired. "I suppose that if you are, it is my duty to ask you if you would like me to be the new leader of the Nyfrio." Dax continued. "Do you mind me taking over the position?" He asked the mare, looking her in the eye. He stepped forward and watched the mare intently. He tried to see what she was thinking but could not tell. He turned again and looked around. It was getting late, he hoped that she wouldn't have a problem with him taking over as Lord of the Water Herd, as he longed to return to the entrance to the land where it was easier to find food. His vast stomach grumbled. He sighed and looked again at the mare.

Karma gave a small nod when he asked if she was Nyfrio, just like him. "Yes sir, I am. I may not looks like one, but I truly am." she told him. Her natural coat colouring had been a blessing in her eyes. No one bothered her with questions about Elementals, they just saw he as a normal horse. She also figured that if she ever had to sneak into a nother land, she wouldn't even be looked at twice since she looked so ... normal.
Dax then asked her if he was acceptable as the new leader. "Yeah, go for it." she said with a sigh. Truth was Karma could hvae claimed this land as her own once Culver left, but she didn't. she never saw herself as the leader type, nor did she want to be in any position of authority. Plus, she missed Culver. He was a good friend to her and had helped her a lot. Dax would never replace Culver, and Karma was determined to keep her mind set on that.

Satisfied with the approval of Karma, Dax said. "It's beginning to get late, perhaps we should begin searching for a suitable resting place?" The manner of Dax changed completely. To him he was no longer the playful little "runt", but the leader of a herd, or a horse that is. Trying to sound confident and sure of himself he said. "Near the entrance to these lands is the best spot to rest. It's comfortable and the easiest spot to find food." He nodded at the mare to follow him and began walking off in the direction of the entrance to the land. He walked carefully, as he had discovered the paths were unused and unreliable. He stopped slowly and turned to see if Karma was behind him. Uncertain if the mare would follow him.

Karma gave the new leader of her land a disinterested glance as he suggested finding somewhere for the night since it was getting late. Was it getting late? The mare glanced to the sky and saw the sun was dipping away beyond the horizon. Appearantly it was, indeed, getting late. "I guess so." she said quietly with a slight shrug of her spotted shoulders.
The blue roan mare turned to start searching for a place when she heard Dax's voice again. This time he sounded like he was actually the leader of something. This small change caused Karma to smile just a bit. Before she was afraid that she would end up leading him. That would have been the last thing that she wanted.
Dax suggested some place near the entrance of the land where he had seen some decent food that wasn't encompassed by a thick white blanket of freshly fallen snow. "Lead the way." she said with a smile as she backed up a bit in order for him to pass before she started after him. She would now let him talk .If he wanted to converse, fine. If he didn't, fine.

~Dax~
Seeing that Karma was following him he continued on. He felt good about himself. Obviously the mare had accepted him as her new leader. He walked along, slowly and carefully. Watching his surroundings. He didn't see much but snow though. It was winter, no animal would be out and about, save the ravens, wolves and of course the horses. He sighed. It made winter very dreary and lonely. He turned his head to look at Karma again, a smile on his maw. "Would you like to go to the stream nearby for a drink, or find something to eat before we settle down for the night?" He asked the mare. He personally was very hungry and planned to find some food before he found a spot to sleep. The mare on the other hand might not want to. He thought she'd probably appreciate it that he asked about it.

The spotted mare silently followed her new leader. She did not mind not talking. Taking in the gorgeous wint scenery was enough for her. It was always so beautiful during the snowy months. Too bad they were so desolate. There was rarely a sould to be seen, even though Karma knew several different animals still to be roaming around. Somehting about winter just gave one a lonely feeling.
Audits flicked as the lyrics of the stallion drifted back to Karma. A small smile appeared on her face as she replied "That would be splendid. Have any certain spot in mind?" She was glad that he was finally stepping up to a more autorative position than he had possed a while ago. Perhaps he would not make a bad leader after all.

Dax nodded at the mare and said. "Yes, the stream is a minute or to north and you can find good food aways west. I'm going to get some food. If you'd like to get a drink meet me back her soon." Confident that he had made the right decision about food and water, Dax began walking of towards the west. He soon began trotting and thought about the events of the day. He now had his first herd member and felt very pleased with himself. He smiled happily, and stopped in a clearing with a thin layer of snow covering the grass. He began chomping away, he didn't really care where Karma went, he was happy just knowing that his stomach would be full of good food.

Karma silently listened to the stallion. She already knew what he was saying, but she was not going to bother letting him know that. He was her new leader and she felt that this made him feel important, telling her where things were even though she had lived in this land for quite some time before the likes of him ever showed up.
She stood frozen in her spot as she watched him retreat into the distance to find the food he was so keen on getting. It was funny how he had only been in this land for hours and already knew, or thought he knew, everything about it and where the best spots were located. The spotted mare had to stifle a laugh at this, just in case Dax was still in hearing range. It also did not help that sound carried so well across the land during the winter months. Karma knew better spots to get food than where Dax had chosen. There was one back from where they had come, so she decided to set off that way.
Once she had eaten her fill of foliage that wasn't too appetizing from the winter's bitter bite, she decided to meet Dax back where he had told her to. She would humour him, make him feel more important than he really was. Truth was that Karma did not like change. After Culver had left she became very unhappy and bitter. Now Dax had wandered into her home and her life. He would take some getting used to, but she figured it would take a while. Karma was one of the most pessimistic horses anyone would ever meet.
