The mare slowly trekked through the growing snow. Winter. It was one of her favourite seasons. Most horses hated winter time, but it never bothered Karma. Maybe it was because she was a Nyfrio and snow was a part of her element? She always thought that as an explanation. Whatever it was, she didn't let it bother her. She was her own self and could do and liked what she pleased.
Karma had been wandering the island for some time now. She had lived with a very small herd who roamed the unclaimed lands for most of her life. She had decided to leave them almost a year ago when she heard of the elemental risings. Perhaps there were more Nyfrios around the island, even though she highly doubted it. It was worth a shot though right?
It had taken her such along time to even meet another Nyfrio. The one she did meet was a very old mare who turned out to be her great grandmother. She stayed with her for a while until the old mare got sick and died. Karma then went on her way again.
She had followed her instinct and it lead her to this land. She felt almost at home here. Could this be the fabled old land of the Nyfrio kind? Would there be any here, or would she be the only horse in the land? Another thing that frigthened her a bit was if they would recognise her as a Nyfrio. Oddly enough she was not born with any special colours or colour markings, she just had a strangely speckled Appaloosa patterend coat.
The mare let out a sigh and halted in the middle of a large meadow that had a sizable river running through it. This had to be home. She lifted up her Quarter Horse-like head up in the air and let out a long whinny. She perked her ears and looked around expectantly as if she was going to recieve a response.

The cold wind did not bother the large draft horse as he leaned against a large willow. The beast was rather content with the lands he now resided in, not even bothered by the fact that he was alone. The stag had been alone since he was four, he was damn used to it. The Nyfrio stallion stepped forward, black daggers scraping the ground as he brushed against the willow branches. He let the cold leaves tickle his face for a moment before he lunged out. The cold air welcomed him as he trotted toward the lakefront. Brown optics swept over snow covered ground, wondering if he could 'bend' the snow as well as the water. Yet... Culver did not want to try just now. Besides, he was thirsty and had better things to attend to. Once Culver start something, he almost could not finish and he did not want to leave his chores for the day.
Although... he felt unsafe. As if something was going to jump out and attack him. He knew he deserved it, he was a loner and a scavenger. All he did was look for the easy way out! He was... pathetic. He had left his herd at the age of four because a stallion had challenged him for it. He'd fled! Culver still held the burden on his shoulders, he became used to it. When others found his coward side, he was left alone. So, when he was alone, he would stand and think. And that guilt would drive him forward to be better. Culver found himself pushed forward by his own guilt and anger. He would be a better stallion than even the one who challenged him for his lands. One day, he would feel like he had done a good job. But his life was not finished yet. He had so much he needed to do. The stag felt like he was on the road to recovery, though.
Ears shot forward, body stiffened. Fear seemed to shock through him, but he quickly realized this was no stallion trying to get his land. It was... a mare? Culver smiled, lifting his crown and letting out a loud bugle. A kind response, he was coming. Dinner plate sized hooves beat the ground, crushed the snow, and drove the stag forward as he ran. Culver had no idea he would find a mare so quickly! He thought he would be alone for some time now. Leg feather was soaked as he leaped through inches of snow that were much deeper than normal. The feathering clung to his long legs awkardly, bothering the stag. Yet that was the least of his annoyance as his mane stuck to his neck like it was glued. He slowed to a trot, wearily slowing down. A bumpy trot, his head bobbed upward as the she horse came into sight.
Brown pools quickly swept over the mare, yet they did not look happy. Only dull with the burden that he carried. Would he lose her too? Culver quickly shook those depressing thoughts away. Of course he would not, he was older and experienced. Okay... not experienced but... strong. The stallion no longer wished to carry the guilt on his shoulders and the Nyfrio prayed that this was his new life... that soon the guilt would melt away. Culver knew he would appear unfriendly as long as he stood there staring at her dully. It was like a switch was pushed as he walked over to her. His eyes changed, shimmering with a warm air to them The large draft horse slowed to a halt next to her, giving her enough room that she would not feel uncomfortable. Culver sucked in air as he took a closer look at the beauty.
She was... she was indeed beautiful. A childish longing grew on him as he stared. She had a regal, kind look. Or maybe that was just him. Culver had never had a love before, he had never been in love before, barely even had a real crush. Culver felt awkard as he looked at her, so he backed up. "Greetings." That was his only offering for the moment as his expression look sheepish. Once again, he spoke. "My name is Culver, I am the lead here." Culver kindly offered his name, hoping she would understand how awkward this was for him. He had not been in the presence of a mare (formally) in a long time. He was just an ugly duckling, he was not even blessed with beautiful markings! Just ugly blue stripes down his nose, back, and back right leg. She was... blessed. Culver could not help but hope she came with him.

Karma was about to continue on her way when she heard a return to her call. Could it be? Another Nyfrio lived in this land? Something in the back of Karma's mind otld her to forget it, it was just some random horse wandering around much like herself. The mare willed herself to believe otherwise. It would be so nice to finally converse with someone of her kind. Maybe they knew how to harness their powers. Karma's parents had only taught her the basics, they had long forgotten the old ways of teaching. Perhaps this equine could help her with more advanced elemental skills. Wouldn't that be fantastic? This made Karma's excitement grow.
Karma then saw him; a draught type horse with teal markings that stood out yet complimented his lighter coat. Yes, he was definitely a Nyfrio. No other horse breed would have such distinct markings like that. Karma, being the second guesser as she was thought what if he would harm her? He was so big compared to her. She would never in a million years stand a chance against him. Her fears were put aside when he greeted her with a smile and warmth in his eyes. That made her feel much better already. Size certainly was an intimidating feature.
"Hello." she said quietly with a very small bob of her head as she looked up to the brute. Karma had to hold back a small laugh. He may be intimidating, but he spoke with a bit of uncertainty. It really wasn't that funny, but mostly a relief to the spotted mare.
The stallion then intorduced himself has Culver. "Nice to meet you Culver." she said again. "M'name is Karma." she offered her calling to him. So this horse, Culver, was lead of this land. Even though Karma heard this being the queen of doubt she had to ask him if he was a Nyfrio. Another horse could have easily found this land and claimed it without really knwing what group this land belonged to. "Um, sorry I have to ask but are you by change of Nyfrio blood?" she rambled off, looking to her feet after she spoke. Karma mentally scolded herself. This was no way to talk to the leader of a land, especially if he was an elemental leader.

All his mind seemed to be doing was ramble as he looked at the mare. He was big, awkward, and got tongue tied too many times to count. She was elegant, graceful, with a soft tone that reminded him of his older sister. Culver could only smile and wistfully wish that she would join him. The stag needed refreshment, she was refreshing. Her face, her looks, her tone, it calmed him. Being alone with his thoughts wasn't exactly what it was cracked up to be. After awhile... loneliness would set in and the horse would slowly go insane. Culver had times where he would chat to himself, he had times where he couldn't even talk to another equine because he did not know where to start. Yet... he was able to stay calm and he was quite proud of himself. Culver knew it was not right to be a prideful soul but every once in awhile it was okay, right? His ears barely caught her greeting, then she spoke again.
"Nice to meet you Culver." she said again. "M'name is Karma."
Culver smiled, bobbing his head in a contented greeting. 'Karma. Karma.' "Karma." He tested the name on his tonge, warmth in his eyes. "Well. 'Tis a pleasure to meet you, Miss Karma." Culver spoke with a good natured tone, declining his fear and awkwardness and replacing with happiness in the voice. Her name was like a trophy to Culver, just knowing her name made him happy. Yet, he was an easily pleased man. The stag lifted his crown, forelock falling out of his face as he shook it. There was an awkward silence, but Culver was afraid to break it. After all, he might screw up and say something stupid. He preferred speaking when spoken to but sometimes not even that saved him from embarrassment. After all, the stallion stuttered through words like a colt just learning to talk. But... Culver could be a leader! He was a quick learner with a level head on his broad shoulders.
"Um, sorry I have to ask but are you by change of Nyfrio blood?"
The large draft horse smiled, his eyes twinkling as he looked at her. "Am I of Nyfrio blood?" Optics scanned her expression for a moment before he continued on. "I guess you could say I am." Chuckles entwined in Culver's words, a deep yet quiet chuckle. Yes, he was. Why would any other horse claim this land? Yet he was not laughing at her, it was just an amusing question to him. "I am guessing a lady such as yourself is a Nyfrio too?" She had the looks, certainly, and Culver could only hope that she was indeed of the same blood. After all, they might have more in common if she was! Or she could have just been curious and asked. 'Don't skip to conclusions.' Culver always had to remind himself that, he did not want to just assume that she was of the same blood as the stag himself. Culver shuffled his large hooves in the awkward silence.

The mare physically smiled when he greeted her. He wasn't so frightening at all. In fact Karma began to wonder if he was even fit to be a leader. Yes he was big and strong, but very awkward when speaking. But what did she know? She knew never to judge someone until you actually got to know them. She knew nothing of Culver and was not obligated to make any accusations.
The next words out of the stallions mouth made Karma a very happy horse. He was a Nyfrio. Her eyes just seemed to light up at those words. "Yes, yes I am." she answered quickly. "I'm so glad I found you. I was beginning to think that I was one of th eonly Nyfrios left on this island. I'm very glad to see that we really haven't died out like I hear other horses tlaking about. I'm sure we're a rare breed but at least there is more than one of us." she rattled off, the excitement in her voice gorwing.
She then blurted out her next question "Are you good with your elemental control?" Just as soon as she said it she wished she hadn't. It sounded so foolish and childish of her! Why did she say that?! Normally Karma would think everything out before she said it, she never acted on impulse like a lot of horses did. She saw how it got them into trouble and she had never wanted that. Now here she was doign exactly what she had been trying to avoid doing most of her life.

The cold air gingerly poked at both equines as they stood there conversing. The stag was no longer bothered by the conditions around him, he merely held all of his attention on Karma. Culver felt self conscious as he stood there, wondering whether he was a good leader or not. Even though he was no gifted speaker, he had a drive to protect those he loved and well... he liked being the protector. It was a weird thing was Culver. He liked knowing he was in control, and he liked nice and orderly things. The draft horse did not let his speaking get the best of him, he was almost always like that around mares. Not stallions. Culver was always on edge and always fiery around stallions. Not only that, but he was a gifted fighter! Not that he went looking for fights, that was foolhardy. Not that every once in awhile he itched for a fight.
"Yes, yes I am." she answered quickly. "I'm so glad I found you. I was beginning to think that I was one of the only Nyfrios left on this island. I'm very glad to see that we really haven't died out like I hear other horses talking about. I'm sure we're a rare breed but at least there is more than one of us."
Many emotions ran through Culver as she spoke. He was excited that she was a Nyfrio, his eyes lit up like fire. He then felt humbled that she was glad to find him, Culver had never thought anyone was looking for him. Default or not, it was still humbling. Then sadness... she thought she was the only one? Other horses thought the race had died out? The beast looked crestfallen, eyes searching her expression. "Surely we are not the last two?" He said quietly, and as the words escaped his mouth a thought entered his mind. The stag wondered about the coming Spring. If they were the last two, wouldn't they reproduce? Make more? He desperately did not want the Nyfrio race to die out. The thought was rather... scary though. Culver decided not to think about it, he would think about it next Spring anyway.
"Are you good with your elemental control?"
Was he good with his elemental control? Culver had not tried in awhile, but last time he tried he was pretty good at controlling the water. It was what occupied his time when he was younger. Learning. Culver tossed his head to one side as if to shrug. "Ah... kinda. I have not tried in awhile, to be honest. I used to use my elemental control all the time but I sorta... I guess you could say I got bored when I was younger. After that I just kind of forgot to be honest." Culver had not meant to speak so much and he was afraid he may of said too much. He wheeled to his right, looking at the snow with curious eyes. The stag breathed in, breathed out, concentrated and... and... there. Ah. The snow lifted and twisted elegantly in the air. Culver let out a chuckle, his smile widening. He quickly made shapes. Rain drops, leaves, circles and squares.
After his little two minute show, he dropped the snow and it made a soft thump. A proud smile crossed his face. "Yeah, I guess I'm okay." Chuckles wound their way around his words. Culver bashfully ducked his head, afraid she might think of him as a show off. That was not what he intended at all and prayed she did not jump to conclusions. "Did you ah... need a teacher or something?" Culver asked quietly.

Karma stared at him for a moment when he mentioned them being the only two. The ever pessimistic Karma began to think that maybe that was a possibility. What if they were the only two? The only other Nyfrio she had never know of were her parents who had long since passed away and her grandmother who had met death face to face as well. Then again she had thought that she was the only one left until she stumbled across this land and found Culver. There was a great possibility that there were more just like her, trying to find their way back to the old land. "I'm sure there are more." Karma said after a minute. This was one of the first times she had ever voiced an optimistic opinion about anything. "They are probably looking for this place like I was. It's well hidden, but I know they'll be along." she added with a risiing confidence in herself and in the idea that more Nyfrios were searching for eachother and the land.
The spotted mare stood quietly as Culver stammered out the answer to her next question. So he knew how to use his powers to some degree, but he was not full in tuned with them like she had hoped. She had learned in exactly the same way that he had. With the small number of Nyfrio that there were on the island, he probably knew how to harness his powers the best over all of them. No one had been able to teach proper technique for decades. Those damned Zunden had really ruined more than just the splitting of herds in the old days. They had ruined tradition and caused horses to forget who they really were.
"I learned in very much the same way." she commented. Culver then gave her a small demonstration of what he could do. A smile came to Karma's face as she watched. He was better than she had expected. The small smile never left her mouth once he finished. "Bravo." she said with a dip of her head in respect. "You're pretty good if I do say so myself." she said. Culver then went on to ask her if she wanted a teacher. "I guess you could say that." she said, unsure of herself. "You see I learned in very much the same way you did but I'm afraid I'm not up to your level." Then again he was the leader and he should have the strongest powers out of all the Nyfrio. It was only logical.

"I'm sure there are more."
Culver's ears pricked in surprise, eyes scanning her expression with ease. This was the first time he had ever heard her say anything optimistic, and that seemed refreshing enough. Culver smiled, nodding gently toward her. Either way, she was the only other Nyfrio he had ever met. There could possibly be more... but Culver was happy enough just having Karma there with him. "They are probably looking for this place like I was. It's well hidden, but I know they'll be along."
The stallion offered another nod, enjoying the optimistic comments from the mare. It certainly made the overly cautious stallion feel better about that. But... was this place really that hard to find? He hadn't found it with ease and Culver had a decent sense of direction too. Another worry swirled around in his worrying mind, what if Nyfrio horses tried to find him but could not? Certainly they would be naturally attracted to this place, though? Culver took it for a reason. The Nyfrio race needed a leader, and the dull stallion was willing to learn about leadership. Battle came naturally, but decision making was rather hard for him. He had never had a natural sense of justice, and Culver never really took any sides during fights. When it was obvious, the stag knew very well how to make decisions but hard ones he just had trouble with. Wasn't that natural though?
"You're pretty good if I do say so myself." After all of that, and all of the pretty mare's comments... that was the first thing he really paid attention. "Thank you, Karma." He bowed his head slightly, acknowledging her compliment with a bashful attitude. Lifting his head once more, Culver wondered what to do now. "I guess you could say that." she said, unsure of herself. "You see I learned in very much the same way you did but I'm afraid I'm not up to your level." Culver's ears pricked. So, she needed a teacher? Culver was no talented teacher but he was willing to try with her. The oddly colored stallion let a smile cross his blue marked face. Would she be willing to learn from him? After all, he certainly did not know enough to be a real teacher but he was willing to try. Turning around, he started walking in the other direction.
"C'mon, I know just the place to learn." With that, he started galloping. The stallion expected her to follow. He knew where he was going, even though the stag had only lived here for two days. Culver had enough time to explore. After a few minutes, he skidded to a halt next to a small stream that fed a decent sized pond just a mile or so away. It was positioned at the edge of his territory, the pond was, and was a good place to practice as well as look at fish. But for now, they would just practice at the stream. "Well, I do not know where to start." Culver offered, embarrassed. "Uh, usually I stand very still, concentrating on my target. Take a deep breath, concentration, imagine in your mind what you want it to do. Then sort of let it happen. 'Tis how I learned." Culver offered the best that he could give.

Karma offered the large brute a small smile as he accepted her compliment and thanked her. It almost made Karma a little bit happy knowing that for once she had made someone else feel a sense of happiness. Normally she was the downer of any group of horses and would make the worst comments. When asked her opinion she would always find some fault in whatever it was that they were asking about before she complimented or found something good about it.
Karma looked a bit surprised when Culver said that he knew just the place to learn. What had they been talking about exactly? It then dawned on her that she had asked him to teach her how to use her powers a bit better. She now felt very stupid that she was caught up so much in her thoughts. How could she do that? Normall she was so good at giving other horses her full attention.
Once again, Karma had gotten lost into her mind and was only brought back to reality when she heard the hard thudding of Culver's large hooves on the frozen ground. The spotted mare quickly shot off after him, only slipping a couple of times. Karma had not run like this in such a long time and was a bit short of breath when Culver halted up ahead.
They had halted at a very serene looking spot. The snow around it was undisturbed and very, very white. There was a sizable river that was not yet frozen due to the constant flow of the water. It was a very nice spot.
Karma tilted her crown to listen to Culver's voice as he explained to her how to start. "Alright. I guess I'll give it a go." she said when he was done. The mare shut her eyes for moment and let out a long breath. When she opened her eyes again, she intently focused on a spot of snow near the river bank. A few sconds later she successfully moved a sizeable amount of snow to where she and Culver were standing. The strain on her mind was too much and she let it drop. Damn. She'd get it next time.

"Alright. I guess I'll give it a go."
The stag pricked his ears, realizing that the mare was beside him. Culver smirked, nodding and stepping back a bit to let her go at it. Brown optics swept over Karma and wondered how well she would do. She had Nyfrio in her, certainly she would do pretty well. As the thoughts passed through his thick skull, he watched her concentrate on a patch of snow nearby. It rose at a decent pace, moving over to the stag and fae. Culver pranced backward, nack arched and nostrils flared. He smiled as the snow plopped onto the snow, but it was quickly wiped away when he saw how disappointed she looked. "Karma," Culver began gently, his eyes twinkled with a little bit of amusement. "That was great! It took me a long, long time before I was able to move that much of snow that far." Culver smiled.
"Uh... 'sides, if you progress this much this fast than you will learn quickly!" The chestnut stag motioned toward the pile, smiling at it. The pile looked promising, he wanted to try that again but his thoughts began to wander. His eyes began to scan the area rapidly.
The water flowed along the wide stream, making sure that the water did not freeze over, much to the King's pleasure. Besides, if Culver found any evidence of freezing, he could take advantage of it and practice his skills. Unfreezing water was something he wanted to learn, as well as freezing water and transporting water long distances. Those were on his list of things to do. Besides, he had nothing better to do. His morning routine was to go to this stream, drink a little, mark the borders, then rest for the rest of the day. Sometimes he would go the rounds again just to make sure there were no horses that he had kept waiting. Culver could only wistfully wish that Nyfrios would flock to these lands, word going around that a new King had arisen. Besides, the stag was displeased at the fact that he might have to go recruit members. It had to be done eventually.
The Nyfrio stag's optics swept over the cold area, just taking in the sight. Powder snow was like a blanket to the terrian, keeping the grass and dirt isolated and damp. Small plants bravely... braved the cold and poked through the snow like little rays of sunshine. They were refreshing and colorful compared to the bright one-toned snow that blanketed the territory. Ice covered the edges of the stream, trying to freeze it over. Yet it failed... like every Winter. Culver noticed that the ice also tried to wrap up a nearby tree's roots. The chestnut inhaled quickly, just then noticing that a lone squirrel was angrily chattering at him. She must have been doing that for awhile, Culver just did not notice so quickly. Concentrating on the ice on the roots as well as concentrating on what he wanted the ice to do. And it melted.
"Try again." Culver finally stepped out of his thoughts, shaking his misty eyes. The stallion shook his head, trying to clear his raging thoughts. "I apologize, if I do that again just... poke me or something." The stag laughed,

Was he actually praising her? Karma never had much praise in her life, just criticism. She did not mind criticism, it helped her become a better horse. Or so she thought. But praise, that was something new for change. Dare she say it, it felt good to recive a compliment liek this, especially from one of her own kind with a skill much greater than her own.
"Thank you sir." she said with a bob of her head. But was it really that good? Culver could just be saying it to make her feel good. He seemed like the type that would find something good about everyone. Karma would rather have her faults pointed out to her so she knew what to fix next time she tried. What did bother her was his next statement. What progress? This was not progress, this was just a demonstration of her skill she already knew with a few encouraging words added by Culver. It was nothing special.
While Karma was engrossed in her own thoughts Culver seemed to be in his as well. She only noticed his melting of the ice out of the corner of her eye. It was one of those things she saw but did not really register for a couple of seconds. She was only pulled out of her own thoughts when he told her to remind him that she was there when he was in his own thoughts. Karma just gave him a curt nod and turned away from him to try again.
This time she successfully moved the snow pile further. This actaully made her smile at herself for a moment. Maybe Culver's advice on focusing actually worked. She also successfully managed to freeze a very small patch of water near the river bank. She turned to Culver and said "I think I'm done for now." Karma really didn't want to push herself any further today. She felt like she needed to work on what she knew before trying anything else.

The stag watched as she moved the snow pile farther than she had last time and he smiled, bobbing his head contentedly. She did very well, he was extremely pleased with her. Yes, he was glad to have company. The beast stretched lazily, giving her a warm smile. It was afternoon now, the sun was warming his back as they stood next to the stream. It was a very nice place, it had more foliage than anywhere else in his entire terra and overall... it was relaxing. He let out a quiet snort, prancing backward and looking up. Some day... he would be a great Nyfrio he knew it. He would have a Queen by his side and he would have many friends living with him. His only problem was that... Nyfrio horses were scarce. Oh so scarce. Culver could only pray that more of them came to learn and to live in peace and happiness. He liked knowing that he had a bright future.
"I think I'm done for now."
Her voice was quiet and Culver met her gaze with an understanding look. He wasn't exactly cut out to teach, besides he was pretty sure she had it down and if she practiced she would get better for sure. Or was that the skill she already knew? Culver felt bad, wondering if he had messed up again. He turned away and started walking. "Sure, yeah. Hey, com'ere I wanna show you something." The big beast smiled at her and walked swiftly toward his favorite place in the entire territory. These lands had so much that he enjoyed... it was hard to take it all in but he did. Mahogany eyes swept around, knowing where he was going. The stag kept his gait casual, yet swift. As if he was going... on a border patrol? Eh. Finally, he came to the place where he really wanted to be.
"See? These Willow trees are fantastic, right? So many of them, I kind of consider them places to sleep. It's beside a pond to. Just my element." Chuckles wound their way around his words as he motioned toward the pond that was beside them.

Karma smiled when the large stallion didn't oppose to her wanting to quit. He was understanding as well as nice! Karma had just happened to find the right horse. Yes, he may be a bit awkward, but with a bit of time he would make an excellent leader. The Nyfrio needed someone like him. They were kind hearted horses who liked to keep to themselves. It was easier to stay out of quarrels that way. No muss no fuss, that is what Karma always said.
Karma's chocolate optics made their way to Culver as he said he had something to show her. The mare's ears perked in curiousity. What could it possibly be? She quickly jogged after him through the snow. He had such large strides compared to her short ones. That was the one downfall to having a stocky, Quarter Horse like frame. Karma didn't mind it at all. She enjoyed this jaunt through the snow. It was nice to see her new home this way.
Finally, the large stallion stopped ahead of her. Karma, not paying attention to him but to the scenery around her, almost ran into him. Lucky for her, she looked in front of her before the collision. Kamra grinned at his words. It really was a beautiful place. It almost seemed like a fantasy, especially with the falling snow. Everything look so peaceful and delicate. "It's beautiful." she whispered as she looked around. "How did you find this land if you don't mind my asking?"
