She hadn't been happy for some time. Shadow had seen it. She remembered her mother playing with her. Bouncing and cantering about the clearings with her. Showing her the lands she would one day rule. But now, her mother would only stand alone and stare blankly into the distance. She would pace up and down the river bank. A few times Shadow had woken to find her gone. After a few urgent calls the mare would return, though deeply distracted. Shadow had noticed this, but had the others?
River couldn't remember the last time herself and Lassan had been alone. Had had time to talk. With so many mares he had little time for anything. Even for his Goddess. That silly mare Artava had pretty much taken over the herd dominance, though for some reason River didn't care. Now a days she just couldn't be bothered. There were to many stupid mares in the herd for her to even bother with them. To even consider it. Youth these days. Twits they were.
Looking over at her sleeping filly, River couldn't take it anymore. Though she loved Shadow, she felt a certain wall had appeared between them. That filly was the only reason she was still here. She would have up and left long ago had it not been for her. But naturally, it was her foal. She wouldn't survive the swim to land from here. River wasn't even certain she would.
Gently, she nuzzled the foal awake. "Come, Shadow" River lead the drowsy foal past her sleeping herd mates and to Lassan's side. There she let curl up and sleep. With a gentle nuzzle around the ears, River then turned to her mate. She watched him a moment, touched his cheek with a white silken nose, before she slipped into the dark of the night.
Her only hope was Lassan would understand....
