Tonderoga waded out of the frigid water onto the beach. It was cold in the water and cold on land. But, that was winter for you. There was endless golden sands everywhere, and a green patch in the distance. That had to be the pine forest. He had heard about this place before, his mom told him about it. And finally he was here. He neighed, a deep, powerful sound, to see if there was a lone mare here. He may not want to claim, and it wasnt breeding season, but there wasnt anything wrong with a little company. And maybe breeding in spring. But, he was getting ahead of himself. So, he just walked towards the pine forest far off in the distance, deeper into his new home. His new life.

Over the past year, the ivory mare had taken to just wandering the lands of Isola Dei Dei. She was never headed anywhere special, nor was she looking for anyone. She was just wandering. She needed to keep her mind off things, which considering her position in her herd now, was not an easy thing to do. Even if she wanted to forget everything she could not. There was too much at stake. There were other horses who were counting on her.
Today she had decided to wander onto the very beach that she washed up on years ago. She had come a long way since then. She was still the same horse, but she now had a lot more to add to her ever growing story. Just like clockwork, the moment she set hoof on those familiar red sands, she heard a call from another on the beach. Her dished head lifted as her chocolate eyes roamed the surrounding area. There he was. Just another miserable soul wandering. There seemed to be a lot of those lately.
She would have turned around today and not even bothered with him, but he had to have seen her standing there. It was not like she blended in with the sienna sand. With a heavy sigh, Phantom walked forward in the direction of this stranger. She returned his greeting with a small nicker of her own to let him know that she did not mean him any harm.

Tonderoga looked over as a white mare nickered to him. She seemed to be alone. "Hello, Miss." he said, his voice tenor and smooth. Tonderoga knew he must look like the arabian prince he was. His coat had to be a gleaming dark chestnut. It was always gleaming, but the water always made it glossier and darker than it naturally was. Tonderoga wondered it this mare was alone or had a herd. Well, he would figure it out soon enough. He turned, walking towards her as she did him. As Tonderoga neared her, thw ivory mare seemed to be an arabian, also. And she was pretty. A mare such as her has to have a herd; Tonderoga thought. Well, at least he had some company.

"'Ello." she returned with a small nod of her head. Damn it. She could not get out of this one. An introduction was already in progress. Why did she have to return his call. Any other time she would have avoided a strange horse or merely gone up to them to see why they were alone and what or who they were looking for. It was almost as if something had possessed her to do so. It was so uncharacteristic for her to seem to eager when coming across another horse, even if it was one she knew.
He was quite the looker, she had to give them that. He made her feel so inferior. He was so young, so beautiful. Here she was a scared up mare who had seen better days. She had once been as pretty as he was; a gorgeous coat, a mane and tail to die for. Now she was nothing more than a walking reminder of the life she had lived on this island. Her time here had not been kind to the Arab mare.
"You out 'ere all alone?" she asked, her brown eyes scanning the landscape for any other signs of life. It was not often a young, handsome stallion like this one was alone. Either that or he was out looking for mares to add to his growing brood. A lot of young stallions seemed to be doing that these days.

"Yes, ma'am. Im just looking for a companion." Tonderoga replied, smiling. This ivory arabian mare had clearly been beautiful when she was younger. She was still quite pretty if he did say so himself. "I just recently arrived here." he added. This mare seemed to be nice, not as social as some mares he had met. But, he was not one to judge. "So what is a mare like you doing out here alone?" Tonderoga sked, concern in his voice. Some stallions were not as kind as him and would kill or do other bad things to any mare that happened their way. Tonderoga was not like that. He was a royal gentleman, and a royal gentleman he would stay. Even if his palance had been burned to the ground by some mangy mustang stallion.

Of course he was looking for a companion. Every lone horse out here was. Well, young lone horse that is. The older ones did not need anyone at all. They were smarter, wiser. Phantom liked to place herself in that category. Having a companion was just asking for trouble. Especially if they were of the opposite gender. He was foolish. His idea of a companion was probably a mare like herself who was going to be the death of him one day.
Ah, so he recently arrived on this pathetic plot of land. She remembered when she first set hoof on Isola Dei Dei. Back then she had looked at this opportunity in a whole new light. She wanted to seize every single opportunity that came her way. She had been something in her old life and she was going to be something in her new life. Unfortunately for her, she got what she wanted and now look where she was standing.
"You don't have to worry about me." she reassured him when he asked her what she was doing out here all by herself. "Everyone around here knows not to cross me. I just come out this way for some time to myself so I can think and get away from everything. This is the very beach where I started my journey." she told him matter-of-factly.

"Sorry to be interrupting your thoughts."Tonderoga replied. He did not wish to be interrupting anything, no matter what it was. He didnt like it wehn others interrupted him, so he did not interrupt others. "I dont wish to cross you. You'd probably beat me to a pulp." Tonderoga said, laughing. He couldnt really fight and everyone back home had known it. So he had used his status to be sure no one messed with him. Everyone had been afraid f his father. Even him, but his father would never hurt him. He was the heir to the throne, after all. Until that stupid mustang stallion came along; Tonderoga thought darkly. He would get him.. one day.

"You aren't interrupting." she dismissed. After all, Phantom was the one who walked into his space, not the other way around. If there was interrupting going on around here, it was her doing. "I've learned over time that you can never totally be alone out here. Yes you have time to spend with you thoughts and your thoughts alone, but coming across another horse is an inevitable fact of life on this island." Phantom finished telling him.
Why was she so talkative today? Perhaps the loneliness really was getting to her. It was either that or the fact that this stallion might be a possible new herd member. He was young, strong, and new to the island. That was exactly the kind of horse Phantom liked to come across. Her current goal was to rebuild the herd she was practically forced to take over.
"As long as you don't pose a threat, I would never dream of hurting you." she said with a small bob of her head. "Tell me stallion, do you have a name?"

"I am Tonderoga. May I ask your's?" he replied, smiling. Where had his manners gone? He had forgotten to even introduce himself! How unlike him, although it was probably due to their conversation. "I am glad you do not wish to hurt me. I would have to rebuild my pride after." he added, laughing. He may not have been around other horses latley, but he still had his great sense of humor. That was not gone with the wind, as his manners appeared to be. Tonderoga shifted his weight a little as he waited for the while mare to reply.

Tonderoga. His name was Tonderoga. That was certainly one she had not heard before today. Every time a new horse showed up on this island from the outer world, their names seemed to be more and more interesting. Phantom often wondered how she got stuck with such a seemingly simple name. From what she could tell from meeting all these other horses, humans could be much more creative than calling a white horse 'Phantom'.
"Nice to meet you Tonderoga." she said with a friendly dip of her head, properly greeting him. Ever since she had taken over the herd she was now leading, manners seemed to be her number one thing. Though she was still a warrior at heart, she was no longer just the lead warrior of her herd, she also led it. It made her more conscious of how she acted around other horses, especially those who were not part of her herd. She had learned from experience that kindness was key. She was more likely to be a good representative of her herd if she just minded her manners and tried to be a bit more conversational when it came to meeting new horses.
"I am Phantom, Goddess of Terra de Rocas." she introduced herself. She had almost forgotten that she had not shared her own calling with the stag. On Isola Dei Dei it was customary for horses who had either grown up there or who had been living there for some time to give their name and title in their herd (if they had one that is) to any horse they met.
The mare cracked a small smile at Tonderoga's joke. "Pride is a hard thing to recover. You can lose everything and gain it back, except for pride. There will always be that weak spot, even if one thinks that they have recovered." she quietly commented. Why was she telling him this? It was just a stupid joke. He probably did not care about anything she had to say like that.
"So you say you are looking for company, yes?" Phantom changed the subject. "How interested would you be in joining a herd? There's certainly plenty of horses for company there."

"Nice to meet you to, Phantom." he said, smiling. Her name fit her coat. Phantom. It was a nice name. Tonderoga nodded at her comment about losing pride. He sure ahd lost alot of that lately. "I would be most delighted to join your herd." Tonderoga added, smiling. There would be other horses and he would be welcome. What a stroke of luck; he thought. Company and acceptance, without anyone doing it just because he was of Arabian royalty. It was nice to be liked and accepted just for being hisself. It had never happened before. He ahd finally ran far enough that no one knew of his parents.
