The lovely smell of spring filtered through the lands of Liberta, the grasses growing wildly and the trees budding with life. But, within the shadows of the trees, one life seemed to stall. Malifex lay there, her head upon the ground, her breathing shallow. How it came to be that she was in such a state, none of the herd seemed to know, nor did it seem like they cared. Malifex hadn't talked to anyone all winter, not even Night. The warrior could fend for hereslf, but she was lonely. She hated being here by herself within the shadows of the trees, laying upon her side and having no one to talk to seemed to lower her mood even more.

She had been thinking about what had happened months ago, the day that Night wasn't there to help her until it had been too late. Her scars were still there, a painful reminder that the warrior had to live with every day. Those scars had led to a few suicide attempts, but she didn't go through it. Malifex's feelings had stopped her, had encouraged her to continue on with life. Shaking her head, Malifex lifted her head from the grass, looking out across the darkened meadow that night had washed over.

Flaring her nostrils, the painted mare lifted her body from the ground, shaking off the loose leaves and grasses. Flicking her tail, she went out into the world, the stars dancing above glittering faintly and the moon shining brilliantly down. Malifex could believe this was a beautiful sight, now if only someone would come and take her out of her depression.

After encourtering Kibitala that morning, and what with not talking to anyone for so long, he felt worn out emotionally. The moon had dismissed the sun in the sky and everything appeared to have an enchanting glow to it. Being spring the weather remained not warm but not chilly. Inbetween. The harsh winds had been replaced by a light breeze that ticked his obsidian cloak. Night walked around, his hooves feeling heavier than they had the previous morning. He stopped by at the pond to get a drink before taking off again into the semi-darkness. Occasionally he would spot a pair of deer quietly grazing, or hear some nocturnal animal sauntering off at the sound of his loud footsteps. How long the stallion had been walking, he had no idea, but some time later he stopped to hear something. Audits pricked, he scanned the terrain ahead of him as best as he could, but to no avail found what was making the sound. Raising his pallet into the air he tested the air for a scent. Squinting his eye just a hint, he knew immediately who it was: Maliex, the warrior he had recruited in the past. The painted essa whom he had not seen nor heard for months. The beatiful horse with which he had poured out his feelings to, only so that he would get none in return. Humiliation settled, but knowing that he couldn't just leave, he turned around and searched once more. Near a tree she lay, and listening closely he could tell that the sound he was hearing was actually her breathing. It sounded labored, to his sensitive ears.

He edged closer, his crown held lower to the ground so he would not seem so tall. For several moments he stood, gazing at her bedraggled body, until he found his voice somehwere in the back of his throat. "Malifex." Even with the option of speaking, he did not know what to say. Her name was all that he thought of saying aloud, as it replayed soundlessly in his mind. What was he to do, when she was in such a state? What had she gone through for her to come out looking like this?

Eyes of the essa moved to look at Night, and she paused for a moment. Finally, she turned her body to look at him, and she nickered. "Hello, Night," she breathed, her head lowered slightly. The eyes of the Beta looked pained, and Malifex wondered what was wrong. "Is everything alright?" She reached out her nose to him, reaching up to his cheek to nuzzle it gently. She knew how he felt, she remembered his words, and her inability to tell him her feelings back. Of course, she felt that way toward him, but she was afraid to say the words. It was all because of that day when she was forcebred. It wouldn't stop playing out in her mind; she thought she couldn't trust anyone with herself ever again, not even Night.

But the Beta was so kind to her, he was there right after, to help soothe her aching heart. But, he had disappeared, and that had hurt more than the other actions toward her did. Flicking her ears slightly, she withdrew her muzzle, and snorted. She didn't hold any ill feelings toward him now, just concern and love. "You don't look too good. Surely you aren't upset that I didn't reply back with my feelings..." her words trailed off, and she lowered her head once agian, almost ashamed.

Why was she ashamed?! She didn't do anything that bad, did she? Flaring her nostrils, she stepped to Night's side, placing her head upon his back gently. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

He looked at her, his eyes seeming to stop and examine each and every ailment her poor body possessed. It caused him grief to see her like this, when long ago he had known her at best when she was the prim dainty paint ready to seize her job as warrior. But times changed, shifts were made, and you had to move on. There was no other way, was there? Otherwise you would stay, as if caught in a moment that had ended much quicker than hoped for, and things would come and go while you tried to latch on to the things that mattered most... Or, so Night assumed. That's how it appeared at first glance, when he saw Malifex slip away from him and the love he had for her.

The obsidian beast had been weaving in and out of reality for the past moments, conjuring large thoughtful debates in his head. Of course, the side of him opposing his wishes was falling short of excuses and he was beginning to build a bridge around his wall of doubt. As the essa touched her velveteen maw to him, he immediately responded. No such thoughts were put to mind, whence he acted truly. Stepping forward the beta brought his jaw to her neck, caressing the lovely softness of it all. "Despite all of the goings, now I am." He listened to her further words and couldn't help but wallow in the truth of them. "Malifex, I am not one to lie. Therefore, yes, I was upset." He paused for a moment before speaking. "Although I can't know what it was like, I try to understand the burden of it all. I try..."

Feeling her move her crown and place it softly on his back, he looked back at her. Quietly, almost a whisper, he said "Darling, and I to you."

"You have nothing to be sorry about, Night. You did nothing to me, you were only protecting me and trying to show me that life could still go on after such events," the painted warrior spoke ever so softly, as if raising her voice would cause some sort of catastrophic event that she wouldn't be able to control. Flicking her ears back slightly, she looked to Night, and a small smile crossed her muzzle. A smile she hadn't worn in quite a long time.

"You should know, I have those such feelings now. I just couldn't tell you back then because... well... I guess I was afraid. I didn't want to even be able to trust anyone anymore." She shut her mouth quickly, realizing she had been blabbering on. Perhaps Night didn't care why, he just wanted to hear that she loved him back.

Night listened to her intently, and sighed in the relief of having all of his questions answered finally. All that time he had gone back and studiously reviewed his actions, but now he was being told what he had hoped all along; he hadn't done anything wrong, Malifex had said. It felt as if he had been pulling a large cart up a hill, and at this moment he was set free from the harness surrounding his shoulders. He lad looked at her, catching her as she smiled. Automatically he smiled back, and it wasn't a woeful smile, but a one of happiness.

He dipped his crown down again, stroking her back with his maw. He savored every moment, hoping with all might that it wouldn't end. "Malifex, know you can trust me. I will always be here." After what seemed to be a minute at the very least, he raised his palette and looked down at her. His gentle eyes saw her like they saw no other. "Will you be?" He felt selfish asking her this, as it was not his right to want that. He didn't want to tie her down, and he knew fully well that she was a young dove with a many years ahead of her. It was too much to ask for, but yet he couldn't help being hopeful. He lay his kissers on her back again, waiting to hear what she had to say.

So Malifex wasn't expecting for him to be so understanding, for Night to place his head upon her back. A large smile soon crossed the painted mare's maw, and she sighed deeply. As he asked her if she were going to be there, she flicked her ears forward. Why wouldn't she be? Always, Night. She reached over, placing her maw to his shoulder and breathing in deeply.

What exactly did this mean? She stared at Night for a few seconds, still curious as to what this meant for the two. Night.. does this mean.. we are together? Since she was still fairly young, and had never really been with someone, she was new to the whole 'together' thing. Perhaps it did mean they were mates, and they would be together, forever. This caused the warrior's heart to swell slightly ... with love? She did love him, didn't she?

The mare shifted her weight slightly, letting her tai flick behind her body ever so slowly, so that she didn't hit Night. It was peaceful, having her raging mind finally at rest after everything that had happened to the poor mare. A small ripple of pain flickered through her body, but she ignored it, it was something that she was used to because of her unhealed wounds.

He closed his eyes, and inhaled her scent, listened to the steady beat of her heart. Her words surprised him, in an inconceivable way. He took a step back, so that he could face her when she spoke to him next. If she was going to be there forever, and so was he, what was to stop them from spending it together? He surely wanted to, with a great enthuse. He hoped she thought similarly, because forever sure was a long time. Not that he was complaining one bit. "I... yes, that's what I got out of it." he said with a goofy smile.

Over years mares had taunted him with their natural fragrances, and he wouldn't slant the truth, they definitely had intrigued him. But he had known little of them like he knew this femora, the ones he did know tended to be occupied with other follies than who exactly they wanted, and just knew that they wanted. Malifex wasn't one of them. She was an equine with an important role in her herd, and this satisfied the stag, knowing she was more than that. The onyx brute touched his maw to hers, cherishing the feeling he had in his chest. If he could spend the rest of his life in this exact moment, he would have.

Of course it had meant they were together. That small smile was still upon the mare's maw, as she flicked her ears forward, placing her head over Night's back gently. For once, she could breath freely, knowing that this stallion would protect her from anything and everything. Even if he hadn't succeded that one day, he would always be there for her in the future now. Her eyes closed slowly, as she seemed to drift into a light sleep.

If ever there was a moment in time, that I could freeze into place, and never let go of, it would be right now, her voice was soft as she spoke, like the gentle spring breeze that floated around them, playing gently with their manes and tails. I have never felt so... free. Free of the burdens of life, free of my past, free of everything. I'm glad that it can be shared with you. The warrior kept her eyes closed, as she lay her head upon the stallion's back, breathing ever so slowly. It was as if she were to take a deeper breath, that it would shatter the fairy tale that was playing out.

Suddenly, she brought her head from Night's back, looking over to him. Night... did you beat yourself up over what had happened that day?
